Our San Diego's Pacific Rocky Shores Trip (San Diego Bird Festival) took us to the Oceanside Harbor on Friday afternoon, March 6, 2009. As we were walking back to our bus after birding the area, this Peregrine Falcon with a Ring-billed Gull firmly grasped in its talons flew overhead. A Peregrine's main prey is other birds. Female Peregrine Falcons weigh between 32-34 ounces while males weigh between 18-20 ounces. Ring-billed Gulls range between 10-24 ounces depending on their stage of development. It was an amazing sight to see this Peregrine carrying prey that weighed almost as much as it did. It was a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the low 70's.
